a series of conversations by Tomasz Dostatni

Beyond Borders

Aula Arits, 2011-2012

Beyond Borders is a series of meetings organized by the Higher School of Humanities and Journalism in Poznań and the Beyond Borders Foundation, aimed at sparking creative reflection on transcending limitations — cultural, social, psychological, and spiritual. The discussions address themes such as combating stereotypes, confronting one’s own weaknesses, and breaking free from patterns of thought.

Each meeting is an opportunity to engage with exceptional personalities — thinkers, journalists, clergy, artists, athletes, and politicians — whose work and attitudes exemplify the act of crossing boundaries, both literally and symbolically. Among the guests were: historian and former Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Władysław Bartoszewski, Israeli political scientist, politician, and diplomat Szewach Weiss, and Polish Roman Catholic priest and publicist Father Adam Boniecki.

The series is hosted by Dominican friar, publicist, and spiritual guide Tomasz Dostatni OP, who lends the conversations not only spiritual depth but also a reflective social dimension.

The cycle was inaugurated on October 6, 2011, with a debate titled Against Anti-Semitism, inspired by the publication of an anthology of texts edited by Adam Michnik. The speakers were Archbishop Henryk Muszyński and Adam Michnik, editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza. The discussion focused on memory, responsibility, and contemporary forms of prejudice.

On January 18, 2012, a meeting was held on the condition of Polish journalism. Two distinguished guests — Teresa Torańska, known as the “First Lady of Polish Journalism,” and Father Adam Boniecki, senior editor of Tygodnik Powszechny — shared reflections on the role of the media, the responsibility of words, and the challenges facing journalists today.

On February 29, 2012, the memory of Ryszard Kapuściński was honored in the event Ryszard Kapuściński on His 80th Birthday. Guests included Dr. Alicja Kapuścińska, the writer’s wife, and journalist Mirosław Ikonowicz, his close friend. The event featured a screening of Piotr Załuski’s film The Second Noah’s Ark and a presentation of the book Hombre Kapuściński.

On March 19, 2012, a debate titled The Language of Love – The Language of Hate. The Church and the Modern World took place. The discussion was preceded by the launch of Professor Bożena Szaynok’s book Pastor. Conversations with Father Ludwik Wiśniewski. The debate featured Professor Aleksander Hall, Ludwik Wiśniewski OP, and the author herself. The event also included a screening of Paweł Woldan’s documentary The Dominican.
