Two Women, 2007

Poznań, Sołacz Park

Sylwester Ambroziak’s Two Women is an outdoor sculpture unveiled in 2008 in Poznań’s Sołacki Park, near the ponds and Małopolska Street. Commissioned by the Wielkopolska Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts as part of the Poznań City of Art project, it is a concrete version of an earlier work by the artist from 2001, originally made in patinated wood.

The sculpture depicts two seated, nude female figures. Their deformed faces, prominent lips, and exaggerated anatomy combine influences of Neo-Expressionism, folk art, and prehistoric aesthetics. The women’s bodies form a compact mass based on triangular composition — their thighs, calves, and bent backs outlining its shape. The figures embrace with evident tenderness, suspended in a silent, motionless gesture of closeness.

Since its installation in Sołacki Park, the work has entered into a lively dialogue with its surroundings. Locals interact with it on their own terms — anonymous pranksters have been known to put bras on the figures, and despite occasional acts of vandalism, the sculpture remains a recognizable landmark in the park’s landscape.

The work was created in cooperation with the Wielkopolska Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts.
