Epitaph for Komeda, 2013
Poznań, Ławica Airport
Epitaph for Komeda is an installation by Piotr Kurka, which until recently was located in the main hall of Poznań-Ławica Airport, named after Henryk Wieniawski. Created in 2013, the work captivates with both its form and its soundscape.
The installation consists of two elements: an upside-down replica of a Blüthner grand piano suspended from the ceiling, and directly beneath it, a pouffe shaped like the same instrument. Between them lies a dedicated sound zone.
The object was created using an old, damaged piano, restored on the outside to look new. Inside, directional speakers were installed to play the music of Krzysztof Komeda. When seated on the pouffe, the listener hears — at random — one of five of Komeda’s compositions, including themes from Rosemary’s Baby and The Law and the Fist, arranged by Poznań musician Jan Jęchorek.
The work was created in cooperation with the Wielkopolska Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts.
