Małgorzata Kopczyńska

Dancer, 2007

Poznań, Ballet School

Małgorzata Kopczyńska’s Dancer is a bronze sculpture located in the courtyard of the General Ballet School on Gołębia Street in Poznań. Created as part of the Poznań City of Art project, since 2008 it has been part of the collection of the Wielkopolska Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. In the interwar period, the same building housed the State School of Decorative Arts and Artistic Industry.

The artist sought to capture the moment of transition between childhood and adulthood. The sculpture, depicting the nude figure of a young dancer in one of the basic ballet poses, was originally displayed with a mirror in which her silhouette was reflected. Today, placed within the school space, she encounters the gazes of maturing students every day — they themselves become her unique and individual complement.

The work is dedicated to the memory of the artist’s father, the eminent sculptor and teacher Józef Kopczyński.

The work was created in cooperation with the Wielkopolska Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts.
