Igor Mitoraj

The Charm of the Gorgon. Sculptures and Drawings

Kraków

The retrospective exhibition of Igor Mitoraj’s sculptures and drawings, entitled Mitoraj. The Charm of the Gorgon. Sculptures and Drawings, was presented in 2003 in three cities: Poznań, Kraków, and Warsaw.

The event was held under the patronage of the President of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, and ran from September 2003 to February 2004. The audience not only had the opportunity to admire the artist’s monumental works but also to meet Igor Mitoraj in person.

In Poznań, the exhibition was accompanied by a lecture from Beata Rymkiewicz, The Deconstruction of Myth in the Work of Igor Mitoraj, which shed new light on his artistic language.

Although Igor Mitoraj created in a contemporary spirit, his sculptures remain deeply rooted in classical tradition. Marble busts, armless torsos, and serene, motionless faces refer to the canons of antiquity. They do not seek to shock — their power lies in harmony, silence, and timeless form.
